My newest Fine Arts piece...Whatcha Got?

I've been invited to submit two of my fine arts pieces to a very prestigious Western Art Show in Pendleton, Oregon which is for women artists only, so in between book illustrations, I just completed this mixed media painting (guache and prismacolor). This painting is based on a photo I took of a young cowgirl in Nevada, the daughter of the woman who runs the equine therapy center that Mary Jean Kelso contributes to from her Andy and The Albino Horse royalties. The horses were following Amanda around because she had a bag of Chex snacks. "Elvis" the horse really wanted some of those snacks!

K.C. is so proud to announce that "Preston, The Not-So-Perfect Pig" written by her niece, Janie Robinson, has been released. K.C. just giggled as she illustrated this wonderful story.

K.C. is so proud of Joshua Pengra, the winner of the Newberry Award for the 2009 Angel to Angel Book Writing Contest. Joshua was in Ms. Zistil's 4th grade class where K.C. spoke about illustrating to help the kids with their writing/illustrating project. He was one of the local finalists for the public library's book writing contest. K.C. was instrumental in getting the five Redmond finalists' book projects submitted for the Angel to Angel contest. Joshua's book was the national winner. K.C. recently met with Joshua and his family to present him with his award. It was a total surprise to him. Needless to say, he was very pleased and his parents were 'over the moon.'

What an exciting weekend! K.C. just returned from the 26th Annual Western Art Roundup in Winnemucca, Nevada, with a fistful of awards. K.C. swept the categories in Mixed Media and Acrylics winning first, second and third place in both categories. All told she won eight awards including the Indian Heritage Award.
Mary Jean Kelso joined K.C. on Saturday, Sept. 5th., for a successful book signing. Janie Robinson's new GAP book "Preston the Not-So-Perfect Pig" illustrated by K.C. was a real child-pleaser. K.C. is looking forward to the GAP Get-Together and book signing at Barnes & Noble where Janie will be present for their first joint book signing along with seven other GAP authors. And guess what? This novice book writer will have the opportunity to read her book to real live children!!!
Another highlight of the weekend was a visit from Nevada Governor Jim Gibbons. The governor really seemed to enjoy the show and spent quite a bit of time in K.C.'s booth.

What fun it was to illustrate this book for Marilee Crow. You all will definitely want to read the book. Marilee and I had a great time together at the Santa Barbara County Fair as I worked on five of the illustrations. Marilee was able to give me immediate input (usually ooohs and aaahs!). Marilee Crow, Claudia Valiquet (my publicist) and I shared a room while participating in the West Coast Authors Premiere at the Santa Barbara County Fair in Santa Maria, California this past week. Sharing the room and the event with Marilee was like meeting with an old cherished friend. Then to add icing to the cake, Sue Berger braved horrible Southern Cal traffic and an overheating car to visit with us at the fair. Lots of laughs and giggles. Great fun!

Every new book I illustrate is my next favorite. Here's the cover for a new children's picture book by Marilee Crow called A Short Tale About A Long Tail. I've been sketching some of the pages to take with me to the West Coast Authors Premiere at the Santa Barbara County Fair in Santa Maria, California where I will be demonstrating illustrating. Marilee and I will be at the fair July 15-19 to sell and sign books. My publicist, Claudia, just finished designing a wonderful book mark along with new business cards and a brochure that will include examples of my fine art as well as illustrations. She will be traveling with me and we are looking forward to a great event.

Our 50th Wedding Anniversary

Fred and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary this weekend.  Early Friday morning, our son, Steve and his family (with my two grandkids) arrived from Utah. That afternoon, we went as a family and had our professional portraits taken, then we had dinner at Shoji's (Teppanyaki-style Japanese restaurant) in Bend, Oregon. My little granddaughter cried when she saw the flames rise up from the grill at first, but eventually she started to smile and laugh. The food was wonderful. Then my family hosted a reception on Saturday at our church for friends, family and fellow church members. My brother and his wife, my nieces and other family came. My son, Steve, was the master of the barbecue. The guests raved about his steaks and grilled chicken. We had a wonderful time. Then on Sunday, my daughter, Julie, and her husband invited Fred and I over for a wonderful dinner at their home in Sunriver. So we had quite a weekend. Here are two of my favorite photos from our professional session:
